New fee for United States Immigrant Visa

US Citizenship and Immigration Services will start to collect a new fee of $165 for applicants who are applying for immigrant visa to the United States on February 2013. This additional fee was announced last year on September 20, 2010. This new fee will go towards paying the cost of processing the immigrant visas in the United States after immigrant visa holders receive their visa package from Department of State. This includes staff time to handle, file and maintain the immigrant visa package, the cost of producing and delivering the permanent resident card (Green Card) to the applicants.

In order to simplify and centralize the payment process, applicant will pay online through the USCIS website after they receive their visa package. The new immigrant will pay the fee online through USCIS website. Department of State will provide applicants with specific instructions on how to submit payment when they attend the consular interview.

USCIS processes approximately 36,000 immigrant visa packages each month, and this new fee can potentially help secure service for new immigrants who are coming to the United States after they have received their immigrant visa from the US Embassy or Consulate abroad.
