Senator Charles Schumer (D-New York) predicted on Sunday that the Senate’s Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill would pass by July 4 and went on to say that a strong vote for the bill could result in forcing the Republican congressman in the House to embrace the Gang of Eight’s bill, despite House speaker john Boehner’s (R-Ohio) vow to the contrary.
Senator Schumer said he and the other authors of the proposed bill hoped to win at least 70 votes, including nearly a majority of Republicans. The House is preparing its own draft of a series of immigration bills and House speaker Boehner has said the lower chambers would not be “steamrolled” by Democrats.
In a joint statement last month, the entire House Republican leadership said the House would not simply “take up and pass” the Senate bill. However, Senator Schumer has his doubts and said “there are about 60 or 70 of his people who are against any immigration reform, but at the same time, he knows that the Republican Party will be consigned to a minority party for a generation if they’re anti-immigration”. Senator Schumer thinks that if the Senate bill passes with a majority Republican vote and support from almost every Democrat that the House Republicans will reconsider and adjust their opinions on signing the Senate bill accordingly.
