Department of State Consular Services and the Supreme Court’s Ruling on DOMA

On June 26, 2013, Secretary of State, John Kerry released a memo stating “to fully implement the requirements and implications of the Court’s decision, we will work with the Department of Justice and other agencies to review all relevant statutes as well as the benefits administered by this agency”.

After the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn key aspects of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), President Obama has directed the Attorney General to work with other members of his Cabinet in reviewing all relevant federal statutes in order to ensure this decision, including its implications for Federal Benefits and obligations, is implemented swiftly and smoothly.

The Department of State, Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice are working to review all relevant federal statutes and regulations that affect visa processing and immigration benefits.
