Earlier this week the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) held a news conference in which Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, announced that they will no longer comply with requests from the federal government to detain immigrants.
LAPD will now only honor requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hold someone in custody if there has been a judicial determination of probable cause or a warrant from a judicial officer, Garcetti said. “The federal government is in charge of enforcing federal immigration laws, not us at the local level,” Garcetti said in a speech outside of Los Angeles City Hall on Monday, July 7, 2014.
Our immigration attorneys office is located in Los Angeles and we welcome the news from Mayor Eric Garcetti. California is home to the largest population of undocumented immigrants in the United States and we always will lead in immigration and human dignity. We are still eagerly anticipating an immigration reform bill soon.
