House Passes Bill to Block Immigration Action

Our U.S. immigration attorneys in Los Angeles follow the latest in immigration news to keep our clients and community in the know of important new updates. The latest news about President Obama’s new executive action on immigration is that the U.S. House of Representatives, lead by Republicans, has voted 219 to 197 on a bill that blocks the executive actions.

The bill comes from Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) and states that “no president has the authority to give protected status to millions of immigrants”. Our immigration legal experts reviewed the bill and it is so broad that it does not just specifically target potential beneficiaries of the new policy, but could affect other immigrants as well.

The U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has already spoken out and said that the Senate would not vote on the bill, effectively killing it in its tracks. The majority of Americans feel Congress should construct a bill of their own for immigration reform if they are unhappy with the President’s executive actions, or be willing to work with the President on a bill that Congress can agree on as well.
